How Fractional CTO Engagements Are Priced in Saudi Arabia

Three common pricing models

Fractional CTO work is usually priced in one of three ways. Each fits a different stage and level of uncertainty.

  • Monthly retainer: a fixed fee for an agreed time commitment and scope, reviewed periodically
  • Fixed-fee project: a defined deliverable such as a technology roadmap, audit, or vendor selection
  • Interim engagement: a higher-commitment period while a company hires a full-time CTO

What drives the cost

The main drivers are time commitment, the level of responsibility, and complexity. Owning delivery for a regulated FinTech product is a different job from advising a founder on an MVP once a week. Other factors include team size, the number of vendors to manage, on-site requirements, and how urgent the situation is.

Compare it with the full cost of a hire

When comparing with a full-time CTO in Saudi Arabia, compare total cost, not salary alone: housing and transport allowances, GOSI contributions, end-of-service benefits, medical insurance, visa and relocation costs for expatriate hires, equity, recruitment fees, and the months a search can take. Also consider the cost of a wrong hire at executive level. A fractional engagement isn't always cheaper over the long term. While the company is still finding its shape, though, it's usually cheaper and lower-risk.

How to scope it well

Define what the fractional CTO owns, what they advise on, and what success looks like after three and six months. Agree how time is used, how urgent issues are handled, and how the engagement ends, including the handover to a full-time leader. A clear scope matters more than the headline monthly figure.
